During my natural hair journey, I have done several perm rod sets on my hair. I did this one on my twa and I loved the results. I used Jane Carter's Wrap & Roll to set my hair.
Then in December 2012, I did this perm rod set using Qhemet Biologics & Taji's Aloe Jelly to style my hair on the perm rods. In both cases, the style lasted about a day because the hold was so soft and because of humidity.
This time because I understand my hair a little better, I used different products for my perm rod set. First, I understand that my hair has high porosity which means it loves moisture. This is detrimental to any sort of smooth curly style. So to minimize some of this, I used Giovanni's Direct Moisture Leave-In Conditioner instead of my usual Koils by Nature Shealoe leave in. The KBN leave in has glycerin which is a humectant meaning it draws moisture to the hair so eliminating this helped to maintain my style longer. Then I used the Koils by Nature Herbal Gel to set the style. Another thing that I did differently with maintaining this style was to sleep on a satin pillowcase instead of putting a satin bonnet on my head. The satin bonnet tended to just mash my curls down.

My Take on CharyJay's Holiday Curls
One of my favorite vloggers on Youtube is CharyJay. Not only does she have fabulous thick hair, but she creates amazing styles for me to try on my own hair. When I saw her latest rod set style, I had to try it for myself and it came out great....for a day. It started getting frizzy & poofy by the end of the day and when I didn't roll it that night the next morning was not cute. Day 2 I pinned it up & tried it again on day 3. I really loved my Day 1 results and I plan to try it again after I get a trim (which I desperately need) so my ends will be smooth. The products I used were Koils by Nature Moisturizing Shealoe Leave In Conditioner, Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream & Taji's Natural Hair Styling Aloe Jelly.
Check out my slide show of the progression from day 1 to day 4 by clicking the "Slideshow of NaturallyNita's Perm Rod Set" hyperlink below and then CharyJay's tutorial under that. Let me know what you think!

Convertable Updo - 3 in 1 style
Have you ever had a hair wash day where you wanted a cute hairstyle but didn't want to take forever to achieve your look? Well, I had one of those days this week. I decided that I would gel my hair upwards in the back and just style the top and front of my hair like in this tutorial.
Day 1
I two strand twisted my hair and then rolled it on the grey perm rods.
I always use Eco Styler gel to smooth my hair in the back. |
Day 2
That night I set my hair using bantu knots so the curls would remain. I'm still mastering this technique. And of course my hands cramped from all the twisting. Ugh! But the curls turned out pretty well!
Day 3
Lastly, I decided to moisturize my hair and then do a twist out for a different look.
Fashion note: This scarf orignally belonged to my mom. It's over 35 years old! #vintage |
I love getting different looks out of the same style!

Roller Set Take 2
Me and my long haired Chihuahua - Princess |
This is just a short post to show my hair for this week. It is another perm rod set. I used more rollers than before to get more curls all over. My plan is to tie my hair down with a satin scarf and hopefully the curls will maintain (fingers & toes crossed).

My Perm Rod Set
This weekend I tried yet another style on my growing TWA....a perm rod set. To prep this style, I did my usual wash regimen (adding the deep treatment masque since it's been two weeks since my last DT). I then applied my leave in and the Jane Carter's Wrap & Roll setting lotion. I used gray and pink perm rods for this style. I was really nervous about whether my curly hair would smooth around the rods but it did and came out very nicely. I slept in the rollers the first night. The second day I didn't re-roll, I had a little less curl definition and alas I got caught in the rain the 2nd day. There went my curls! But it was nice while it lasted!
