My Coil Out Results - 2.5 Years Natural

Before - Finger Coils

After - Coil Out

Yesterday morning I decided to uncoil my hair.  If you follow me on Instagram, I posted that my coils were getting a little frizzy and my roots were puffing a little after a college move in day + 100 degree heat whew.  Since my hair was coiled very tightly all the way to the ends, I misted my ends with water to reactivate the gel and create a little slip & coated my hands with coconut oil as I pulled the coils apart.  It results in fuller coily hair with lots of movement.  I have a little frizz but I like that effect.  Here are a few shots of my final results!  I love it!

If you've never done a coil out check out this video below.  She made her coils a lot larger than mine but you will see the technique used to uncoil the hair.

Revisiting Comb Coils on My Natural Hair

After advising Christyn to try out finger coils on her hair and seeing the below video, I really wanted to try coils on my hair again.

This time I made a few modifications to who I styled my coils.  I did as the video suggested and kept my hair soaking wet & soaked with gel.  The difference was instead of using my fingers, I used a rattail comb to style my coils.  In the past, my roots were never coiled tightly enough and would puff up before I wanted. I used my Koils by Nature Herbal Styling Gel on freshly shampooed and conditioned hair.  I used Giovanni Direct Leave In for my leave in conditioner and sealed with organic coconut oil.  This style took about 5 hours to complete.  I did the front half of my hair on Friday night and styled the 2nd half of my hair Saturday morning. I maintain the style by sleeping on my silk pillowcase and just shaking my hair to loosen the curls.

Check out my finished results!

Christyn Big Chops!

I've known Christyn for a while and she's always had beautiful long locs.  Well, last year she decided to cut off her locs and start a loose natural journey and she is finding her way through styling!  After wearing her hair cut very closely for a few months, she decided to let her hair grow and venture into attempting some loose natural styles!  This week was her first attempt at finger coils and coil out.  I think for a very first time she did an AMAZING job!  Go Christyn! Check out the photos below.  Also, this was her birthday week.  Wish her a happy birthday and leave her some encouraging words below!

Hair of the week - Coil Out

You guys have seen coil outs on me before and this is just another version where I created a side part.  I had a family reunion this weekend and needed a style that was carefree and would last thoughout the weekend without a lot of additional maintenance and this style didn't disappoint.  Even after being in 100% humidity under a picnic shelter while it poured rain, I did get puffy in the roots, but the coils maintained their hold.  I used Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding for this style.  This is day 4 of the style so I may end up altering it by my wash day.

What I do like about this time is that I am starting to get the hang of creating more curls from my original coils.  It only took me an hour and a half (which is good for me!) to coil my hair and about 30 minutes to do the coil out.  I'm refreshing each day by rubbing a 1/2 a dime size amount of Oyin Handmade's Burnt Sugar Pomade on my hands and fluffing with my fingers.

If you need some tips on creating finger coils or a coil out style, check out this well done video by SimplYounique below.  My hair isn't as long as hers (she's about 2 years natural) and my curl pattern is tighter so I got a different look.  It just goes to show that you don't have to be at the same place in an individual's journey to create their style and make it yours!

Coil Out Revisted

I got inspired this week to give an old style another try after seeing a Youtube video.  It took me a while to finish the style but I was quite pleased with the results and I was able to get two hairstyles out of it before my wash day.  I used Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding to  finger coil my hair.  All you do is take a section of hair and literally twirl it around your finger until you get a spiral curl.  Because I had an issue with my roots puffing up the last time, I took special care to twirl close to my roots and then coil all the way down the section.  This is how it looked after I finished coiling.

I then took each large coil and separated it into smaller coils by pulling the coil out, unraveling & lightly twirling the smaller section of hair to reestablish the coil. I made sure my fingers were coated with coconut oil so as not to cause frizz.  The finished look is below.

As the week ended my hair was getting more & more poofy.  I separated the coils a little more in the front and the back & I pulled the hair back on the sides to create this look.

Here is a comparision shot of my first ever coil out.

My Finger Coils

As I alluded to in my previous post, I got bored with the wash and go after day 3 and wanted something different.  I was on Youtube checking out natural hair videos and got inspired (around 11:30 pm no less) to try out finger coils.  Around 12:30 am when I was still coiling my hair I wanted to kick myself!!!

Here is how I achieved the look.  I used my spray bottle and saturated my hair in sections with water.  Then I applied coconut oil and detangled with my detangling comb.  I then took small sections of hair and twisted around my fingers with Olive Oil Eco Styler gel.  While my hair is definately set, I found that this combo kept my hair from being extremely hard.

I finished around 1:15 am and sat under the dryer for about 20 minutes just to dry the last section of hair.  It took me so long to coil my hair, that the rest of my head had already dried.  The first 2 pictures below were taken around 1:45 am, thus no face shots, I couldn't even fake an awake face at that time of the morning!

I love the results and am going to leave this style in for the weekend, possibly uncoiling on Sunday.

I tied my hair down with my satin scarf and in the morning, slightly lifted with my pick being sure not to (pull it all the way through)  to unflatten my coils.  Tomorrow morning I'll spray with one of Oyin Handmades Juices and apply coconut oil to remoisturize and lift again.

Playing with My TWA

As one of my goals is to learn how to care for and style my own hair, I've been playing with my TWA over the past month.  Here are a few of the easy styles that I did and liked....others I tried & failed (and ladies you will have hair style disasters, but I've learned it's nothing that a good headband and a little water & gel can't fix!)  All styles were created on freshly cleansed hair shampooed (yes, I use a sulfate free shampoo) with Curls Creamy Curl Cleanser and conditioned/detangled with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisturing Conditioner.  I use Giovanni Direct Leave In Weightless Moisture Conditioner as my leave in and seal with Organic Coconut Oil.

The "Wash & Go" (w/ecostyler gel)

While this style seems to be a staple style for most individuals with a TWA,  I haven't fallen in love with it. It seems the gel used to define my curls leaves my hair a little crunchy.  I'm going to keep working with different products until I get the curls defined without the crunchiness.  Any suggestions?  In this picture, I added the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and then put on a good helping of Eco Styler Gel with Olive Oil and rolled my finger tips over my hair almost in a massaging motion to make my curls pop.

Faux Puff with Finger Coiled Bangs

This has been my favorite so far!  I love it because my hair in the puff is sooo soft.  I say this is a faux puff becuase my hair isn't really long enough to put in a puff but with the headband, I'm able to sorta create one.  To achieve this look I added about a quarter size of the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie all over to damp hair sealed with Organic Coconut Oil.  I used a pic to fluff my hair out.  I sectioned off my bang area and put on the headband.  Then I used Jane Carter's Wrap and Roll setting lotion to finger coil the bangs.  It creates sheen and  a very soft hold.

2 Strand Twist Out

This style was a win and a fail.  It was a win because it looked great the first day.  It was a fail because I haven't mastered retaining the wavy pattern for more than 2 days :(   For this style, I saturate my hair with Jane Carter Wrap & Roll Setting Lotion and then 2 strand twist with the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.  You'll see 2 different days in the pics below.  I love the definition and my hair is still soft and well moisturized.

Finger Coils

My finger coils were also a win and a fail.  I use the same combo of the Jane Carter Wrap & Roll Setting Lotion and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie just coiling the section of hair around my finger tightly and releasing.  Unfortunately, my roots puff up leaving just the ends coiled.  So I wouldn't just wear this style without an accessory, but with a headband, it looks pretty cool!

I'm currently wearing my hair in a semi-protective style so I won't be manipulating it quite as much.  I went back to visit Taji and got a partial two strand twist out with a few extensions in the bang area.   I'm going to try to leave this in for two weeks.  I'm maintaining this style by misting with Oyin Handmade Greg Juice and sealing with Coconut Oil in the morning. I'll retwist my hair at night as needed and sleep on a satin pillowcase at night.
