Updated Perm Rod Set

During my natural hair journey, I have done several perm rod sets on my hair.  I did this one on my twa and I loved the results.  I used Jane Carter's Wrap & Roll to set my hair.

Then in December 2012, I did this perm rod set using Qhemet Biologics & Taji's Aloe Jelly to style my hair on the perm rods.  In both cases, the style lasted about a day because the hold was so soft and because of humidity.
This time because I understand my hair a little better, I used different products for my perm rod set.  First, I understand that my hair has high porosity which means it loves moisture.  This is detrimental to any sort of smooth curly style.  So to minimize some of this, I used Giovanni's Direct Moisture Leave-In Conditioner instead of my usual Koils by Nature Shealoe leave in.  The KBN leave in has glycerin which is a humectant meaning it draws moisture to the hair so eliminating this helped to maintain my style longer.  Then I used the Koils by Nature Herbal Gel to set the style.  Another thing that I did differently with maintaining this style was to sleep on a satin pillowcase instead of putting a satin bonnet on my head.  The satin bonnet tended to just mash my curls down.

Natural Hair: Curly Updo & Tall Glam Fashion Look

Yay!  I finally figured out how to use Photogrid!  #learningnewthings  #celebratesmallvictories

LOL!  Ok, earlier this month my church had a Valentine's Event that I attended.  I was most excited about the fact that with my godmother's help I was able to put this entire outfit together with items I already had in my closet.  #WIN!

My Hair

An updo created from a 5 day twist out using Entwine Couture's Creme Jelly Styler.  I specifically used this styler knowing that I was going to create this twist out later in the week.  I used Ms.VaughnTV's convertible updo tutorial as inspiration for this style.

On the 5th day, I sectioned off the back and sculpted it into a textured french roll.

Then I sectioned off the front, moisturized with water & oil, & set on flexirods for the day.  After it was dry, I took out the flexirods, separated the twists, and pinned & styled my curls into this cute style.

OOTN - Outfit of the Night

 Dress - Ralph Lauren
Shoes - Paris Hilton
Accessories - Old

I really appreciate my godmother for suggesting that I pair this eggplant dress with red accessories.  It was a different look but looked great together!  Side note:  I love being tall.  I stand a full 6'1 tall flat but I wore 4 inch heels that night.  People always ask me why I wear heels when I'm already tall.  See how the heels make my legs look?  Yep, that's why! Plus, these shoes just make this outfit look hott!  #tallglam

So what do you think of my look?  What is your go to style for a fancy evening out?

My Take on CharyJay's Holiday Curls

One of my favorite vloggers on Youtube is CharyJay.  Not only does she have fabulous thick hair, but she creates amazing styles for me to try on my own hair.  When I saw her latest rod set style, I had to try it for myself and it came out great....for a day.  It started getting frizzy & poofy by the end of the day and when I didn't roll it that night the next morning was not cute.  Day 2 I pinned it up & tried it again on day 3.  I really loved my Day 1 results and I plan to try it again after I get a trim (which I desperately need) so my ends will be smooth.  The products I used were Koils by Nature Moisturizing Shealoe Leave In Conditioner, Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream  & Taji's Natural Hair Styling Aloe Jelly.

Check out my slide show of the progression from day 1 to day 4  by clicking the "Slideshow of NaturallyNita's Perm Rod Set" hyperlink below and then CharyJay's tutorial under that.  Let me know what you think!

My Puff!

Usually as it approaches wash day and my twist out is getting old, I will pull it back into a stretched curly puff.  I just wanted to compare my puff from June 2012 to  May  2011.

NaturallyNita's Take on MsVaughnTV's Fall Protective Style

Recently MsVaughnTV uploaded a simple fall protective style to her Youtube channel.  I saw this at just the right time because it was wash day and I needed to go out to an event and wanted to look presentable and didn't have time to shampoo, condition, and style my hair.  This style was created from the 3 in 1 Convertible Hairstyle that I just posted.  I didn't take pictures during each step but let me share what I did do.

1. Lightly misted my hair with water.  Remember that the back had EcoStyler gel in it.  Though it had softened up over the week, I wanted to make sure it was moisturized enough to manipulate.

2.  I applied the KeraCare Butter instead of Entwine's Products for added moisture.

3.  I used Taji's Aloe jelly on my flat twists & the twists in the bang area.

4.  To make my "roll" in the back a little fuller, I added a little bit of marley braiding hair in the middle for stuffing and bobby pinned my hair over it.

Check out my results below!

I really liked how this modification to the traditional roll, tuck, and pin turned out!  I still need to practice more on my flat twists but overall I like this style!  It's one that I will definitely try again.

Have you mastered the roll, tuck, & pin hairstyle?  What modifications have you made to make it work for you?

Protective Style - Large Senegalese Twists

For my summer protective style I went to Taji's and had Senegalese twists put in.  However, as this is a favorite summer style for a lot of women and  I like to be different, I had her make them jumbo twists. I loved this style but initially at this length, they were waaay too heavy for me.

So she cut them for me and I wore this style and modifications to it for 8 weeks.

Here I am with Lisa Price of Carol's Daughter after they were cut.  Here is one of the style modifications that was done.

This was a great way to wear my hair this summer & is also a great fall/winter protective style.  All you have to do is moisturize your hair weekly with a mist.  You can keep your scalp clean between washings with witch hazel on a cotton ball.  At night, sleep with a satin bonnet.

Rope Twists - Super Defined Twist Out

At the meet up with Felicia Leatherwood, she demonstrated to the audience on my hair how to create an even more defined twist out by using the rope twist technique to create a two strand twist.  Essentially, you twist your strands separately & then twist them together (in 2 strand twist fashion) to create the twist.  Make sense?  No (LOL!), well check out Youtuber iknowlee's excellent demonstration in her video tutorial below.

Here is how my hair looked after twisting.

And after untwisting:

 Products used:

Koils by Nature Shealoe Leave in Conditioner, Hair & Body Butter & Herbal Gel
Aren't my earrings fierce?!   I love them!  I got them from Sarenzo Beads.  I think they are called stud earrings.

I'm not a makeup expert but I'm just showing my make up look here.  Thanks to my friend, Minerva Danzler for reintroducing me to the red lip!  I loved my golden eyes too!
