Recognizable Natural: Malcolm Jamal Warner
As a child of the '70s & '80s (wait did I just give you enough information to pinpoint my age?? What was I thinking? LOL) One of my favorite TV shows to watch was the Cosby show. Claire & Cliff Huxtable inspired me to aspire for greatness in my educational & professional pursuits and their teachable moments with their children were not only entertaining but also valuable. And then there were their children.....Always getting into various types of youthful tomfoolerly, I learned from them what "NOT to do to be stay out of trouble with the parents! (Side note: I still remember to this day Claire saying to Vanessa...you were out having BIIIIG fun with the Wretched!)
As I approached my adolescent years, Malcolm Jamal Warner, (Theo) became more of a teenage crush instead of just one of the kids. He was the only son and often found himself challenged to reach beyond mediocre to succeed in school. Finding out his character had dyslexia was a huge win for him.
Malcolm Jamal Warner has continued to achieve success in television, starring in Malcolm & Eddie after Cosby & later going on to start his own jazz/funk band, Miles Long. Most recently, he has starred with Tracee Ellis Ross on Reed Between the Lines. Even in this role, he still has that smooth way of conveying his point, those penetrating eyes that convey every emotion & those winsome dimples that make you just smile along with him. He has recently abandoned his long locks for a close fade but on this last edition of the male version of our Recognizable Naturals during this month of love....I wanted to salute his past look.

Natural Hair: Curly Updo & Tall Glam Fashion Look
Yay! I finally figured out how to use Photogrid! #learningnewthings #celebratesmallvictories
LOL! Ok, earlier this month my church had a Valentine's Event that I attended. I was most excited about the fact that with my godmother's help I was able to put this entire outfit together with items I already had in my closet. #WIN!
My Hair
An updo created from a 5 day twist out using Entwine Couture's Creme Jelly Styler. I specifically used this styler knowing that I was going to create this twist out later in the week. I used Ms.VaughnTV's convertible updo tutorial as inspiration for this style.
On the 5th day, I sectioned off the back and sculpted it into a textured french roll.
OOTN - Outfit of the Night
Dress - Ralph Lauren
Shoes - Paris Hilton
Accessories - Old
I really appreciate my godmother for suggesting that I pair this eggplant dress with red accessories. It was a different look but looked great together! Side note: I love being tall. I stand a full 6'1 tall flat but I wore 4 inch heels that night. People always ask me why I wear heels when I'm already tall. See how the heels make my legs look? Yep, that's why! Plus, these shoes just make this outfit look hott! #tallglam
So what do you think of my look? What is your go to style for a fancy evening out?

Wig Review (Protective Styling Option): Beshe LW Mini
I recently purchased another wig.! I just love having the option of changing up my look and I promise you these wigs come in handy when you have to run out of the house really quickly, when you don't have time to do your hair and it isn't styled, or when you just need a break from doing your hair.
Let me share a little bit with you about this piece. This is a lace front wig by Beshe. What I'm learning about Beshe wigs as this is my 2nd one is that Beshe creates very FULL wigs. If you do not like big hair, a Beshe wig is not for you. If you like rocking your hair big & full then you will love a Beshe piece.
Type of Wig: Synthetic Lace Front
Purchased From: HairWigHarlem
Price: $24.49
Shipping: Fast, I ordered on a Tuesday & received on Friday (3 stars!)
Hair texture: Very soft, loose curls
Combs? Yes, 2 on the side & 1 in back
Adjustable strap? Yes
Parting room? Less than an inch
Lace blends well
My impression: I love this wig. I had to get used to the fullness at first but that took no time. It fit snuggly on my head and the curls are soo soft and romantic looking. Because of the natural hairline and the way the lace blends, I can pull back few strands to give it a carefree style and still have a very natural look. I will definitely be wearing this wig for some time.
"My" Hair: To prep my hair for wearing this wig, I moisturized with Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream & smoothed my hair back into a low bun. I placed a wig cap on top of my hair before placing the wig. This is of course a protective style because my hair & ends are fully covered and protected.

Have you ever used wigs to protect your natural hair? Which wig is your favorite?

Recognizable Natural - Maxwell
Soulful. Heart-throb. Finnnnne! Smooth. Sexy. Amazing.
These are all words that come to mind when I think of Maxwell. His name is one of the musical geniuses whose name is synonymous with the Neosoul movement. His deeply emotionally passionate lyrics create music that you can feel in your soul.
Check they lyrics from the song that was his first hit and was the catalyst for the album Urban Hang Suite to go double platinum, Ascension....
It happened the moment,
When you were revealed,
'Cause you were a dream
That should not have been
A fantasy, real
You gave me this beating baby
This rhythm inside
You make me feel good, and feel nice, and lovely
Gave me paradise, sooo
Shouldn't I realize
You're the highest of the high
And if you don't know then I'll say it
So don't ever wonder
Don't ever wonder
Urban Hang Suite, with it hits like Sumthin' Sumthin', Til the Cops Come Knocking, & Whenever, Whereever, Whatever put Maxwell on the map. His look also made him a fantasy heart throb with the ladies. His bohemian fashion style and long loose hair made him dreamy.
After the album Now in 2001, Maxwell took a hiatus. In 2009 he returned, must to his fan excitement with BLACKsummer's Night and the hit single, Pretty Wings. He also returned with a more GQ look, trading his long hair for a close fade and his casual clothing for a suit. What remained true was his amazingly silky voice, his incredible falsetto, and his way of wooing every woman in the room. We anxiously await the 2nd installment of his trilogy and we'll Fortunate to be serenaded by him again.
.......exhale........

My Twist and Curl on Natural Hair
I got my hair trimmed earlier this month and was ready to try some more roller set curly styles on my hair. After seeing iknowlee's tutorial, I was inspired to try this twist & curl again.
Here are the products that I used on my hair to achieve this look (after cleansing and conditioning):
Koils by Nature Moisturizing Shealoe Leave In, Sealed with Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, applied a light amount of Koils by Nature Herbal Gel. I set my hair using the orange perm rods. I loved the way this style turned out. The pictures you see below are actually 2nd day hair. One day 1 I wore my hair styled toward my face but I was rushing that morning and didn't get an opportunity to take any pictures.

Recognizable Naturals: Bob Marley
With this being the month of love and all, I figured I would give a shout out to the natural men we love! Last night during the 2013 Grammy's, a tribute was given to Bob Marley so I thought it only fitting to feature him first!
Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to receive international success. Through his music, reggae music began popular outside of the island borders. His music is seasoned with messages of love, peace, and gave voice to the social and political issues of his homeland & Africans. Unfortunately, as with many musical legends, his music didn't reach its true popularity until after his untimely death at 36. His posthumously released "Legend", a compilation album went 10x Platinum (Diamond ) after it's release in 1984.
One of the signature attributes of Bob's character beyond his ever present guitar was his long locks. Marley was a believer in the Rastafari movement and as a Rasta (though not universally practiced) was the practice of not cutting one's hair as is supported by Leviticus 21:5 & the Nazarite vow. To a Rasta, growing locs is a spiritual journey and the use of scissors, razors, and combs is shunned. Locs are allowed to "free form" meaning that they are created without manipulation from these tools and are only cleansed with water.
I was disappointed that the Grammy's only featured one of Bob's song during the tribute last night so I decided I'd post one of my favorites below. Enjoy!

Recognizable Natural - Bibi McGill
If you watched Superbowl XLVII (Congrats to the Ravens!) then you knew that it was momentous for many reasons. Two brother coaches played each other, this would be Ray Lewis' last game before he retired, Kaepernick, the 49rs freshman quarterback broke and continues to break records, & there were 3 African American female performers. Alicia Keyes sung the National Anthem, Jennifer Hudson sung America the Beautiful with the chorus from Sandy Hook & Queen Bey did the half time performance.
One of the most memorable moments during the half time show was when the guitarist, Bibi McGill was given this moment to perform a solo. Not only was she playing a guitar that had shooting fireworks, but she also had this amazing halo of Afro textured hair. As one who has accidentally set her own hair on fire (warning to all, don't style your hair while tall candles are around - ijs), I was amazed at her fearlessness to have pyrotechnics all around, skillfully play this instrument all while NOT setting her hair ablaze. Flacco may have received the Superbowl MVP, but I think Entertainer MVP should go to THIS sister.
Check out the feature that Curly Nikki did on her blog on Bibi by clicking here.

Get It Right Friday - New Car Buying Tips for Women
Yes ladies & gentlemen, I have a new whip, a new car, a new ride. After 12 years and 345,000 miles on my 2000 Toyota Camry, I have invested in a new car. In December, I bought a 2012 Ford Edge. I was bit nervous about starting this process and there were several reasons: 1. I'm a woman. Salesmen notoriously have a reputation for taking advantage of women in the car buying process. 2. It's been 12 years since I bought a car and I used the internet sales team of the Toyota dealership in that process. 3. I was doing it alone. I had planned to take a guy friend with me to negotiate the terms but timing wise it didn't work out.
At the end of the process, I feel comfortable that I got a great deal. Let me share with you some tips and lessons learned that made my car buying process as a woman a success.
1. I wasn't desperate for a new car. Though my Camry is 12 years old & has high milage, I've taken good care of the car. The car is in great condition. I wanted a new car but I didn't HAVE to have one. Plus my Camry is paid for! So, I was totally prepared to walk away from a bad deal because I wasn't in dire need. This allowed me to take my time and really make sure I was happy with the deal before I purchased. I negotiated my deal over 4 days.
2. Know your credit score & try to purchase when your credit is in good standing. When you have a great credit, you have more power when looking at financing options. The better the credit score, the lower your interest rate will be. You are entitled to 1 free credit report per year. Use the information to ensure that your report is accurate and that negative items have been cleaned up before you go in. You don't want any surprises when you go to make a major purchase.
3. Research the going price of your car at several dealerships before going in to talk to a salesperson. The internet is your friend. Two websites I would recommend is www.carmax.com & www.cars.com. Carmax is the home of no haggling. Therefore, you already know that the salesman's commission is included in the advertised price. That should be the highest that you pay anywhere. Cars.com shows you all the dealerships in the mile radius that you select that have the car that you're looking for and the price they are asking for it so you can compare that against the Carmax price.
4. Research what banks are offering for interest rates. Go to bankrate.com and input the price of the car and the terms of the loan (60 months, etc). Also check out your local credit union rate if you are a member.
5.Understand that your payments are determined by the cost of the car, the interest rate of your loan, and the duration of the loan. If you tell the salesman or finance manager what your desired monthly payment amount is, they will do their best to get it there for you. That could include stretching your loan to 72 or 84 months. Who wants to pay for a car for 6, 7, or 8 years? Your goal is to focus on getting the base rate of the car & interest rate as low as possible. If your debt load & expenses are low, you should be able to get your loan terms to no more than 60 months. This was my repeated point with the salesman. He kept asking me, what payment do you want? My response was, if you get me the lowest interest rate possible and we drop this base rate, the payment will be right. Let's work on that. Of course I knew how much I could afford to pay per month, but if I could go lower than that, why not right? And I actually did. Ask for the details. Don't accept quotes that don't have the interest rate on them or run your own numbers through bankrate.com to see where they are putting you as far as an interest rate. Ask them to see all the taxes & fees. Ask for the out the door price & have them reflect EVERYTHING that makes up that price. Only accept quotes in writing. Their job is to make as much as money possible and your's is to get a reliable car for as low as possible.
6. Don't put money down unless it's a going to make a significant difference in the cost of the car. Putting $2,000 or $3000 dollars down is really only going to drop your car payment per month about $10 to $20 on average. Don't give the dealership your money for that exchange. Ask for quotes that show the difference between $500, $1000, $2000, $3000, and up down until you either see a significant difference or you decide to go with $0 down. Don't worry they'll either run the quotes or you can run them yourself on bankrate.com.
7. Test Drive the Car at a Dealership Separately from when you go to Purchase. I test drove the Edge 3 weeks before I went to start negotiating a deal. I wanted the rush, excitement, and smell of being in a new car to wear off before I went in to negotiate a deal. The salesman wants you to make decisions, especially as a woman, in a highly emotional state, where you just want to get into the car. Don't make decisions when you're emotional (that goes for anything in life). Make your decision when you are calm & rational. This is why buying a car when you are not desperate is sooo important.
8. EVERYTHING is negotiable. I negotiated the base rate, the interest rate, the terms of the warranty (my car was used), I even got free oil changes thrown in. If you don't ask for it, they are not going to just offer it to you. Remember, the salesman does is not working for you. YOU work for you. The worst thing they can tell you is no. But you'll never know if you could get it if you don't ask. If they want that deal, most times they'll say yes.
9. The absolutely best time to buy is at the end of the year. In December, not a lot of people are buying cars. It's cold. Everyone is focusing on Christmas. But it's the best time to buy because dealerships are trying to get rid of inventory at the end of the year. The closer you can get to December 31st the better. But leave a couple of days to negotiate. You don't want to have to make a deal on the day you go in. if you can't wait to buy a car in December, the 2nd best time to buy a car is at the end of the month.
10. Remember the last one to blink wins.
This just means, keep asking until the manager says this is my final offer. As long as he keeps going back to the dealership & finance manager, there is still room on the table for negotiations. Don't be afraid to ask, the worst they can tell you is no. And no doesn't hurt you.
Hopefully, this article will be helpful to another woman who is going through the car buy process alone. Share any of your previous car experiences below!
